MacBook MagSafe Power Adapter BURNS!

Today was a bad day! As you can see from these photos (taken with my iPhone) my MacBook's MagSafe Power Adapter bit the dust and melted. Well not the adapter itself but the attached cable running from the power brick to my MacBook. Of course its not under warranty (I've had my MacBook over two years) and I don't believe Apple ever had a recall on these suckers ~I should probably check.

In any case cord was hot to the touch when MagSafe Adapter was plugged into an outlet. Glad I noticed it when I did. Could have had a nice fire at my place. Wonder if anyone else experienced similar problem? Google here I come...

  1. Just wanted to let you know my charger did the same thing this weekend. My friend said that they may replace it with my Apple Care. Will let you know. Ever find out if there was a recall? These chargers get incredibly hot!

  2. Thanks Anonymous. I read online Apple may be offering free of charge replacement units, although I have not confirmed this because I threw out my burned up adapter. Too late now, no use crying over spilled milk. However if my current adapter does the same thing I'm calling Apple right away.

  4. Hey Paulino,

Not sure if it does matter but I bought same wattage that originally came with my MacBook i.e. 60W. I think wattage dictates how fast your battery charges and if you can charge your battery while using laptop.

  6. Hi Anonymous,

Sorry to hear about your power brick. Guess its a good thing you caught it when you did; could have had a nice marshmallow roast. Are you contacting Apple about it? Have you checked if there's a recall? Let me know thanks.

  7. I just had one of our power adapters do the exact same thing earlier today. The MacBook Pro was delivered almost exactly two years ago. It happened on a teacher's computer in the classroom, but we have a whole laptop cart full of 30 of these adapters that gets used all the time. It makes me incredibly nervous about those. The Apple Care rep didn't look anything up and just said there were never any recalls, but that isn't what I found on the web (though it appears the recall was for the other end of the cord).

  9. Sorry to hear about your adapter Katy. I never tried contacting Apple about it, simply threw mine away. However If it happens again with current adapter I'm taking it to Apple, I'm not buying a 3rd one. If you happen to contact Apple and get positive results please come back here and post a comment. I'm sure it'll help others.

  11. There is an ongoing law suit in San jose "Class action" Against apple for the Magsafe "Should be called "magburn chargers they will replace them go to apple and demand even if yours is out of warranty Bad design and a propensity to cause a fire and harm are the only words you need utter DO NOT let some apple tech smuck try and make you feel its your fault do some research they KNOW these are bad thats why they have redesigned them! I am beginning to hate how apple does business
